Medicine information: Desloratadine
Indications
Long-acting, non-sedating antihistamine for:
- Allergic rhinitis (sneezing, runny/itchy nose, itchy eyes)
- Chronic urticaria (hives) and itching
Dosage & administration
Adults and children 12 years and over: 5 mg once daily.
Children (syrup 2.5 mg/5 ml):
- 6–11 years: 2.5 mg (5 ml) once daily
- 1–5 years: 1.25 mg (2.5 ml) once daily
- 6–11 months: 1 mg (2 ml) once daily (where approved)
- Take with or without food.
Contraindications
- Allergy to desloratadine or loratadine
Side effects
Common: headache, tiredness, dry mouth; in children: diarrhoea, fever, insomnia.
Rare: drowsiness, fast heartbeat, raised liver enzymes, allergic reactions, seizures (in susceptible people).
Precautions & warnings
- Severe kidney impairment: use with caution.
- History of seizures: caution, especially in young children.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Avoid in pregnancy as a precaution (loratadine is preferred if an antihistamine is needed). Not recommended while breastfeeding.
Interactions
Few interactions. Alcohol effects are not increased, but caution is advised.
Overdose
Drowsiness, fast heartbeat. Supportive care.

Store below 30°C.
