Amoxon 250 mg Capsule

Penicillin-type antibiotic used for bacterial infections caused by sensitive organisms:

• Ear, nose and throat infections (otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis)
• Chest infections (bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia)
• Urinary tract infections
• Skin and soft-tissue infections
• Dental abscess
• As part of combination treatment to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (peptic ulcer)

Adults: 250–500 mg every 8 hours, or 500–875 mg every 12 hours. Severe infections: up to 1 g every 8 hours.

H. pylori: 1 g twice daily for 7–14 days with a proton-pump inhibitor and another antibiotic.

Children: usually 20–40 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses (up to 80–90 mg/kg/day for ear infections), as prescribed by the doctor.

• Can be taken with or without food.
• Complete the full course even if you feel better.
• Reduce the dose in severe kidney disease.

• Allergy to amoxicillin, any penicillin, or a serious allergy to cephalosporins
• Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever) — high risk of rash

Common: diarrhoea, nausea, skin rash.

Less common: vomiting, oral or vaginal thrush, itching.

Rare but serious: severe allergic reaction (swelling of face/throat, breathing difficulty), severe watery or bloody diarrhoea (C. difficile), liver problems, severe skin reactions. Stop the medicine and seek medical help immediately if these occur.

• Tell your doctor about any previous allergy to antibiotics.
• Use with care in kidney disease (dose may need lowering).
• Long courses: kidney, liver and blood tests may be needed.
• May reduce the effect of some oral contraceptives during diarrhoea or vomiting.

Considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding when needed; small amounts pass into breast milk.

• Methotrexate (toxicity may increase)
• Warfarin (bleeding risk may increase — monitor INR)
• Allopurinol (more skin rash)
• Probenecid (raises amoxicillin levels)

Mainly stomach upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea). Very large doses may affect the kidneys. Seek medical advice.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Reconstituted suspension: keep in a refrigerator and use within 7 days (or as stated on the pack).
