Medicine information: Nicotinamide + Pyridoxine + Riboflavin + Vitamin B1
Indications
Vitamin B complex (B1, B2, B6 and B3) for:
- Prevention and treatment of vitamin B deficiency (poor diet, alcohol use, long illness, recovery)
- Mouth ulcers, sore cracked lips and tongue (angular stomatitis, glossitis) due to B-vitamin deficiency
- Mild nerve symptoms (tingling) linked to deficiency
- Extra needs in pregnancy, breastfeeding, the elderly, and with some medicines (e.g. isoniazid)
Dosage & administration
Adults: 1–2 tablets daily, or as directed.
Children: syrup 5 ml once or twice daily, according to age, or as directed.
Injection: given IM/IV by a health professional for severe deficiency.
- Best taken after meals.
Contraindications
- Allergy to any ingredient
- Patients taking levodopa alone (pyridoxine reduces its effect)
Side effects
Usually well tolerated.
- Bright yellow urine (from riboflavin) — harmless.
- Occasional nausea or stomach upset.
- Rare: allergic reactions (especially with injections).
- Very high doses of pyridoxine taken for months can cause nerve damage (numbness).
Precautions & warnings
- Do not take more than recommended; long-term high-dose B6 (over 100–200 mg/day) can harm nerves.
- Injections should be given slowly by trained staff because of the rare risk of allergy.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Safe at recommended doses in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Interactions
- Levodopa (pyridoxine reduces its effect unless taken with carbidopa)
- Phenytoin, phenobarbital (high-dose pyridoxine may lower their levels)
Overdose
Generally of low toxicity; large doses may cause stomach upset. Chronic B6 excess causes nerve damage.
Storage
Store below 25–30°C, in a dry place, protected from light.
