Cefexta 125 mg/5 ml Suspension

Third-generation oral cephalosporin for:

• Community-acquired pneumonia, acute bronchitis flare-ups
• Acute sinusitis, otitis media
• Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
• Uncomplicated skin and soft-tissue infections

Adults and adolescents 13+: 300 mg twice daily or 600 mg once daily (pneumonia and skin infections: 300 mg twice daily) for 5–10 days.

Children 6 months–12 years: 7 mg/kg twice daily or 14 mg/kg once daily (maximum 600 mg/day) for 5–10 days.

Kidney impairment (CrCl < 30): 300 mg once daily (children 7 mg/kg once daily).

• With or without food; separate from iron and antacids by 2 hours.

• Allergy to cephalosporins
• Severe immediate allergy to penicillins

Common: diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, vaginal thrush, nappy rash, headache.

Harmless: reddish stools when taken with iron or iron-fortified formula.

Rare but serious: anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, C. difficile colitis, liver or kidney inflammation.

• Ask about penicillin/cephalosporin allergy.
• History of colitis: caution.
• Complete the full course.

Considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding when needed.

• Iron supplements, antacids with aluminium/magnesium (reduce absorption — 2 hours apart)
• Probenecid (raises levels)

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. Supportive care; haemodialysis removes it.

Store below 30°C. Reconstituted suspension: room temperature, use within 10 days.
