Cloxpen 500 mg Capsule

Penicillinase-resistant penicillin for infections caused by staphylococci (including penicillin-resistant strains):

• Skin and soft-tissue infections: boils, impetigo, cellulitis, infected wounds
• Bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis, septic arthritis)
• Pneumonia, sinusitis, ear and throat infections caused by staphylococci

Adults: 250–500 mg every 6 hours by mouth; severe infections up to 1 g every 6 hours (injection under medical care).

Children: 50–100 mg/kg/day divided every 6 hours (e.g. under 2 years: quarter of the adult dose; 2–10 years: half the adult dose).

• Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after food.
• Complete the full course (usually 5–7 days; longer for bone infections).

• Allergy to penicillins
• History of serious reaction to cephalosporins (use with caution)

Common: nausea, diarrhoea, stomach upset, rash.

Less common: itching, hives, thrush.

Rare but serious: anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, liver inflammation (jaundice), C. difficile colitis, low blood counts, kidney inflammation.

• Ask about penicillin allergy before use.
• Liver or kidney disease: use with caution; monitor with long courses.
• Stop and seek help if breathing difficulty, swelling or severe rash develops.

Penicillins are generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• Probenecid (raises levels)
• Methotrexate (toxicity)
• Warfarin (monitor INR)
• Oral contraceptives (diarrhoea may reduce effect)

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; very high doses may cause seizures. Supportive care.

Store below 30°C, dry. Reconstituted syrup: keep in a fridge and use within 7 days.
