Insecticide cream/lotion for:
- Scabies (5% cream)
- Head lice (1% cream rinse/lotion)
- Pubic lice
Dosage & administration
Scabies (5% cream), adults and children over 2 months:
- Apply to clean, dry, cool skin over the whole body from the neck down (including between fingers and toes, under nails, wrists, armpits, genitals, soles of feet). In infants, young children and the elderly also apply to the scalp, face (avoiding eyes and mouth), neck and ears.
- Adults usually need about 30 g (one tube).
- Leave on for 8–12 hours (overnight), then wash off.
- Repeat after 7 days. Reapply to hands if washed during treatment.
- Treat all household and close contacts at the same time; wash clothes, towels and bedding in hot water (or seal in a bag for 72 hours).
Head lice (1%): wash and towel-dry hair, apply to saturate hair and scalp, leave 10 minutes, rinse; repeat after 7–10 days; comb with a fine-toothed comb.
Contraindications
- Allergy to permethrin, pyrethrins or chrysanthemums
- Infants under 2 months (scabies) or under 6 months (head lice) without medical advice
Side effects
Common: itching, mild burning, stinging, redness or tingling after application.
- Itching from scabies can continue for 2–4 weeks after successful treatment — this does not mean treatment failed.
Rare: rash, numbness, allergic reactions.
Precautions & warnings
- Avoid eyes, mouth, inside the nose and broken skin; rinse with water if contact occurs.
- Do not apply after a hot bath (increases absorption) — wait until skin is cool.
- New burrows or rash after 2 weeks may need re-treatment; see a doctor.
- Crusted (Norwegian) scabies may need oral ivermectin as well.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Considered the treatment of choice for scabies in pregnancy and breastfeeding (wash the cream off the nipples before feeding and reapply after).
