Dexsol 10 mg/5 ml Syrup

Non-opioid-receptor cough suppressant for:

• Dry, non-productive, irritating cough (colds, upper respiratory infections)

Adults and children over 12 years: 10–20 mg every 4 hours or 30 mg every 6–8 hours; maximum 120 mg/day.

Children 6–12 years: 5–10 mg every 4 hours or 15 mg every 6–8 hours; maximum 60 mg/day.

• Not for children under 6 years (cough and cold medicines are not recommended in young children).
• Do not use for more than 7 days without medical advice.

• Use with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them
• Children under 6 (under 2 years strictly contraindicated)
• Respiratory failure, severe asthma attack
• Allergy to dextromethorphan

Common: drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, stomach upset, constipation.

Rare but serious: confusion, excitability, serotonin syndrome (with antidepressants), breathing depression at high doses; misuse at high doses causes hallucinations.

• Productive cough with phlegm (bronchitis, asthma, smoker's cough): do not suppress — see a doctor.
• Cough lasting over 1 week, with fever, rash or persistent headache needs medical review.
• Liver impairment: caution.
• May cause drowsiness; avoid alcohol and driving if affected.

Short-term use at usual doses is generally considered acceptable in pregnancy and breastfeeding; ask a doctor first.

• MAO inhibitors, linezolid (contraindicated — serotonin syndrome)
• SSRIs (fluoxetine, paroxetine), bupropion, quinidine (raise levels; serotonin syndrome)
• Alcohol, sedatives, opioids (more drowsiness)

Agitation, hallucinations, drowsiness, vomiting, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, breathing depression, seizures — seek emergency care.
