- Replacing water, salt and some calories in dehydration, vomiting, diarrhoea, after surgery
- Maintenance fluids when a patient cannot eat or drink
- Vehicle for IV medicines
Dosage & administration
Given only by health professionals. Volume and rate are set by the doctor according to age, weight, losses, blood sugar and electrolytes.
- Typical adult maintenance is roughly 25–30 ml/kg/day of fluid (adjusted).
- Children: weight-based calculation; isotonic solutions (with 0.9% saline) are usually preferred to avoid low sodium.

- Fluid overload, pulmonary oedema, severe heart failure
- High blood sugar not controlled, hyperosmolar states
- High sodium or chloride (for saline-containing fluids)
- Severe kidney failure with no urine
Side effects
- Fluid overload (swelling, breathlessness), high blood sugar, low potassium (if not added), high/low sodium depending on the solution
- Vein irritation, thrombophlebitis, infection at the cannula site
- Too-fast infusion: fluid in the lungs
Precautions & warnings
- Monitor fluid balance, blood sugar and electrolytes, especially in children, elderly, heart, kidney or liver disease, diabetes.
- Give thiamine before glucose in malnourished or alcohol-dependent patients.
- Use only if clear and the bag is intact; discard any unused portion.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Used when needed with monitoring (blood sugar and sodium during labour).
Interactions
- Corticosteroids (more salt/water retention, higher sugar)
- Lithium (sodium changes alter lithium levels)
- Insulin and diabetes medicines (blood sugar changes)
- Do not run through the same line as blood
Overdose
Fluid overload, high sugar, electrolyte disturbances — stop infusion and seek medical review.
