Hexiphen 5 mg Tablet

Anticholinergic for:

• Drug-induced movement side effects (parkinsonism, acute dystonia) caused by antipsychotics
• Parkinson's disease (mainly tremor), as add-on
• Some dystonias (specialist)

Adults: start 1 mg daily, increase gradually by 1–2 mg every 3–5 days; usual 5–15 mg daily in 3–4 divided doses (drug-induced symptoms usually 5–15 mg daily).

• Elderly: lower doses, use with great caution.
• Take with or after meals.
• Do not stop suddenly after long use — reduce gradually.

• Narrow-angle glaucoma
• Urinary retention, enlarged prostate with obstruction
• Bowel obstruction, paralytic ileus
• Myasthenia gravis
• Tardive dyskinesia (may worsen)

Common: dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, nausea, dizziness, nervousness.

Less common: difficulty passing urine, fast heartbeat, confusion, memory problems (especially elderly), drowsiness.

Rare but serious: hallucinations, acute glaucoma, overheating (reduced sweating) in hot weather, misuse (euphoria).

• Elderly: high risk of confusion and falls — avoid if possible.
• Heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease: caution.
• Avoid overheating; drink enough fluids in hot weather.
• May affect driving.

Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. May reduce milk production — avoid while breastfeeding.

• Other anticholinergics: tricyclic antidepressants, antihistamines, antipsychotics, antispasmodics (stronger side effects)
• Alcohol, sedatives (more drowsiness)
• Levodopa (absorption may change)
• Metoclopramide, domperidone (opposing effects)

Dry hot skin, dilated pupils, fast heartbeat, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, fever, urinary retention, seizures. Emergency care.

Store below 30°C, protected from light.
