Kilmax 1.5 gm/vial Injection

Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic for:

• Throat, tonsil, sinus and middle-ear infections
• Bronchitis and pneumonia
• Urinary tract and kidney infections
• Skin and soft-tissue infections
• Early Lyme disease, uncomplicated gonorrhoea
• Injection: serious infections, meningitis, surgical prophylaxis

Adults (oral, cefuroxime axetil): 250–500 mg twice daily for 5–10 days; uncomplicated UTI 125–250 mg twice daily.

Children (oral): 10–15 mg/kg twice daily (maximum 250–500 mg per dose), as prescribed.

Injection (adults): 750 mg–1.5 g every 8 hours IM/IV; children 30–100 mg/kg/day in 3–4 divided doses.

• Take tablets after food for better absorption; swallow whole (bitter taste if crushed).
• Reduce the dose in kidney impairment.

• Allergy to cefuroxime or other cephalosporins
• History of severe allergic reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactams

Common: diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, thrush, raised liver enzymes.

Less common: rash, itching, abdominal pain.

Rare: severe allergy, C. difficile colitis, severe skin reactions, blood disorders, jaundice. Injection site pain.

• Tell your doctor about penicillin allergy.
• Severe diarrhoea: stop and seek advice.
• Suspension contains sugar (aspartame in some brands — avoid in phenylketonuria).

Considered safe in pregnancy when needed. Small amounts pass into breast milk — usually acceptable.

• Antacids and H2-blockers/PPIs (reduce absorption of oral cefuroxime)
• Probenecid (raises levels)
• Warfarin (bleeding risk)
• Oral contraceptives (effect may fall during diarrhoea)

May cause irritability or seizures at very high levels; mostly stomach upset. Seek medical help.

Store below 30°C. Reconstituted suspension: refrigerate and use within 10 days.
