Indications

Direct smooth-muscle antispasmodic for:

Irritable bowel syndrome — abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, altered bowel habit
Gastrointestinal spasm secondary to other conditions

Dosage & administration

Adults and children over 12 (10 years for some products): 135 mg three times daily, 20 minutes before meals; or modified-release 200 mg twice daily (morning and evening, 20 minutes before food).

After several weeks of benefit, the dose may be reduced gradually.
Swallow MR capsules whole.

Contraindications

Paralytic ileus
Allergy to mebeverine

Side effects

Usually well tolerated. Rare: rash, hives, swelling of the face (allergic reactions), dizziness, indigestion.

Precautions & warnings

New symptoms after age 40, weight loss, bleeding, fever, anaemia or persistent change in bowel habit need medical review before attributing to IBS.
Porphyria: caution.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Avoid in pregnancy unless clearly needed (limited data). Not recommended while breastfeeding.

Interactions

No clinically significant interactions known (no anticholinergic effects).

Overdose

Possible nervousness, overexcitement. Supportive care.

Storage

Store below 30°C.
