Indications

Broad-spectrum anthelmintic (worm medicine) for:

Threadworm/pinworm (Enterobius)
Roundworm (Ascaris), whipworm (Trichuris), hookworm
Mixed worm infections
Mass deworming programmes (single 500 mg dose)

Dosage & administration

Adults and children 2 years and over (same dose):

Threadworm: 100 mg as a single dose; repeat after 2 weeks (re-infection is common) — treat the whole family.
Roundworm, whipworm, hookworm, mixed: 100 mg twice daily for 3 days, or 500 mg as a single dose.
Tablets may be chewed, swallowed or crushed; take with or without food. No fasting or laxative needed.

Children 1–2 years: only on medical advice (single 500 mg used in WHO deworming programmes from 1 year).

Contraindications

Allergy to mebendazole
Children under 1 year

Side effects

Usually mild: stomach pain, diarrhoea, wind, nausea.

Rare: rash, hives, dizziness; with high prolonged doses (used for hydatid disease): hair loss, liver problems, low white cells, rarely serious skin reactions.

Precautions & warnings

For threadworm, wash hands, scrub nails, change and wash underwear and bedding daily for a few days.
Prolonged high-dose use: monitor blood counts and liver tests.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Avoid in the first trimester. In the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, may be used in deworming programmes when needed. Compatible with breastfeeding.

Interactions

Metronidazole (avoid combination — risk of severe skin reactions)
Cimetidine (raises levels with long courses)
Carbamazepine, phenytoin (reduce levels with long courses)

Overdose

Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. Supportive care.

Storage

Store below 30°C.
