Indications

Topical antibiotic (ointment/cream 2%) for:

Impetigo and other superficial bacterial skin infections (Staphylococcus aureus including MRSA, Streptococcus)
Infected minor wounds, cuts and folliculitis
Nasal ointment: eradication of nasal Staphylococcus (including MRSA) carriage

Dosage & administration

Skin (adults and children): apply a small amount to the affected area 2–3 times daily for up to 10 days; may be covered with a dressing.

Nasal (2% nasal ointment): a match-head amount inside each nostril twice to three times daily for 5 days; press the nostrils together to spread.

Re-evaluate if no improvement after 3–5 days. Avoid long or repeated use (resistance).

Contraindications

Allergy to mupirocin or the ointment base (polyethylene glycol)

Side effects

Common: burning, stinging, itching or pain at the application site.

Rare: allergic skin reactions, rash, dryness; superinfection with prolonged use.

Precautions & warnings

Avoid the eyes.
Ointment base (polyethylene glycol) can be absorbed from large open wounds or burns — caution in kidney impairment.
Do not use for more than 10 days.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Considered safe for topical use in pregnancy and breastfeeding (clean the nipple before feeding if applied there).

Interactions

Do not mix with other topical preparations on the same area (may dilute the ointment).

Overdose

Not expected with topical use.

Storage

Store below 25–30°C.
