Indications

Mast-cell stabiliser (prevents allergic reactions) used as:

Eye drops 2%: allergic conjunctivitis (seasonal and year-round), vernal keratoconjunctivitis
Nasal spray: prevention of allergic rhinitis
Inhaler: prevention of asthma (mainly exercise- and allergen-induced; now less used)
Oral capsules: food allergy (with dietary avoidance), mastocytosis (specialist)

Dosage & administration

Eye drops 2% (adults and children): 1–2 drops in each eye four times daily; continue regularly during allergen exposure.

Nasal spray 4%: 1 spray in each nostril 2–4 times daily.

Oral (adults): 200 mg four times daily before meals (children 2–14: 100 mg four times daily).

Preventive — works best when started before exposure and used regularly; effect may take a few days to weeks.

Contraindications

Allergy to sodium cromoglycate or preservatives (benzalkonium in eye drops)

Side effects

Eye: transient stinging or burning, blurred vision.

Nasal: nasal irritation, sneezing, unpleasant taste.

Inhaled: cough, throat irritation, rarely bronchospasm.

Oral: nausea, joint pain, rash (uncommon).

Precautions & warnings

Not for acute relief of asthma or severe allergic symptoms.
Soft contact lenses: remove before drops (preservative).
Continue regularly for full benefit.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding (very low absorption).

Overdose

Not expected to cause harm.

Storage

Store below 30°C, protected from light. Discard eye drops 4 weeks after opening.
