Medicine information: Bacitracin Zinc + Neomycin Sulphate
Indications
Topical antibiotic combination (powder, ointment) for:
- Prevention of infection in minor cuts, grazes, burns and wounds
- Superficial bacterial skin infections (impetigo, infected eczema)
- Infected wounds after minor surgery
- Umbilical cord care in some practices
Dosage & administration
Ointment/powder: clean the area, then apply a thin layer or dust lightly 1–3 times daily; may be covered with a sterile dressing.
- Do not use for more than 7–10 days without medical review.
- Avoid large areas of broken skin (especially burns over a large area) because neomycin may be absorbed.
- For external use only.
Contraindications
- Allergy to neomycin, bacitracin, polymyxin or other aminoglycosides
- Large open wounds, extensive burns or perforated eardrum (risk of absorption and hearing/kidney damage)
- Eye use (unless an eye formulation)
Side effects
Uncommon: itching, redness, rash at the application site.
Neomycin contact allergy: worsening redness, swelling and itching — stop use.
Rare (with absorption from large areas): hearing loss, kidney damage, neuromuscular blockade.
Precautions & warnings
- Stop if the area becomes more red, itchy or swollen.
- Deep, puncture, animal-bite or serious burns need medical care.
- Prolonged use may lead to resistant bacteria or fungal overgrowth.
- Elderly, kidney impairment: avoid large areas.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Use on small areas only in pregnancy and breastfeeding (avoid extensive use due to neomycin absorption).
Interactions
If absorbed: other ototoxic or nephrotoxic drugs (aminoglycosides, loop diuretics, vancomycin) — additive toxicity.
Overdose
Not expected with normal topical use. If swallowed in large amounts, seek advice.
Storage
Store below 25–30°C, dry.
