Orbuten 1.8 gm/100 ml Suspension

Oral third-generation cephalosporin for:

• Acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis
• Acute otitis media (ear infection) and sinusitis
• Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
• Urinary tract infections, including uncomplicated and complicated (sensitive bacteria)

Adults and children over 45 kg: 400 mg once daily for 10 days (UTI: 5–10 days).

Children (6 months and over): 9 mg/kg once daily (maximum 400 mg) for 10 days.

• Capsules: with or without food; suspension: at least 2 hours before or 1 hour after a meal.
• Kidney impairment (CrCl < 50): reduce dose.

• Allergy to cephalosporins
• Severe immediate allergy to penicillins

Common: nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache.

Less common: vomiting, dizziness, rash, thrush, raised liver enzymes.

Rare but serious: anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions, C. difficile colitis, blood disorders.

• Ask about penicillin/cephalosporin allergy.
• History of colitis: caution.
• Suspension contains sucrose — note in diabetes.
• Complete the full course.

Use in pregnancy only if needed (limited data; cephalosporins generally considered safe). Use with caution while breastfeeding.

• Probenecid (raises levels)
• Oral typhoid vaccine (reduced effect)
• Ranitidine/antacids have little effect on absorption

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. Supportive care; haemodialysis removes it.

Store below 30°C, dry. Reconstituted suspension: keep in a fridge and use within 14 days.
