Indications

Sterile, pyrogen-free water used as a solvent (diluent) to dissolve or dilute powder injections (e.g. ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, meropenem) before administration.

Dosage & administration

Use only the volume stated in the leaflet of the medicine being reconstituted.
For single use only; discard any remaining water after opening.
Must not be injected on its own into a vein in large volumes (it is hypotonic and can destroy red blood cells).
Use aseptic technique; given only by trained health workers.

Contraindications

Direct intravenous injection of plain water in large volumes (haemolysis)
Use as a diluent for a medicine that requires a different solvent

Side effects

None from the water itself when used correctly. Incorrect large-volume IV use can cause haemolysis (breakdown of red cells), fever and kidney injury. Injection-site reactions relate to the medicine being given.

Precautions & warnings

Check the ampoule/vial is intact, clear and in date.
Do not use if cloudy or contains particles.
Discard unused portion.

No restriction for the water itself; follow advice for the medicine being prepared.

Interactions

Check compatibility of the medicine being reconstituted (some need sodium chloride or a special solvent instead).

Overdose

Not applicable when used as a diluent. Large IV volumes may cause haemolysis and low sodium — needs urgent medical care.
