Medicine information: Amino Acids
Indications
Protein building blocks used as:
- IV infusion (hospital): parenteral nutrition when patients cannot eat enough (after surgery, burns, severe illness, gut failure)
- Oral (essential amino acid tablets/sachets, keto-analogues): protein supplementation in malnutrition, recovery, elderly muscle loss; low-protein diets in chronic kidney disease (keto-analogues, specialist)
Dosage & administration
IV: dose (usually 0.8–1.5 g protein/kg/day in adults; higher in burns) and rate set by the doctor/nutrition team, with glucose, lipids, electrolytes and vitamins; given through a suitable vein with monitoring.
Oral: as stated on the product label (e.g. 1 tablet/sachet two to three times daily with meals).
Kidney disease keto-analogues: about 1 tablet per 5 kg body weight daily in divided doses with a low-protein diet (specialist).
Contraindications
- Inborn errors of amino acid metabolism (e.g. phenylketonuria for phenylalanine-containing products)
- Severe liver failure/hepatic coma (standard solutions), severe kidney failure without dialysis (IV)
- Fluid overload, shock (IV)
- Hypercalcaemia (keto-analogue calcium salts)
Side effects
IV: nausea, flushing, fever, vein irritation/thrombophlebitis, raised blood urea, acid–base and electrolyte disturbances, high blood sugar (with glucose), infection of the line, liver test changes with long use.
Oral: usually well tolerated; occasional stomach upset; keto-analogues may raise calcium.
Precautions & warnings
- IV nutrition requires monitoring of fluid, electrolytes, glucose, kidney and liver tests.
- Correct rate of infusion — too fast causes nausea and flushing.
- Kidney or liver disease: specialised formulations.
Pregnancy & breastfeeding
Used when nutritional support is needed, with medical supervision.
Interactions
- IV: check compatibility before adding medicines to the bag
- Keto-analogues (calcium): separate from tetracyclines, quinolones, iron by 2 hours
Overdose
IV excess: nausea, vomiting, raised urea, acidosis, fluid overload — reduce or stop infusion.
Storage
Store below 25–30°C, protected from light; do not freeze. Use IV bags only if clear and intact.
