Indications

Slow-acting symptomatic combination for:

Osteoarthritis of the knee and hip (pain and stiffness), as add-on to other treatment

Dosage & administration

Adults: 1 capsule (diacerein 50 mg + glucosamine 750 mg or as labelled) once daily with the evening meal for the first 2–4 weeks, then 1 capsule twice daily with meals.

Effect starts after 2–4 weeks; review after 3–6 months.
Not for patients over 65 (diacerein) or children.

Contraindications

Liver disease or history of liver disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, bowel obstruction
Shellfish allergy (glucosamine)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Age over 65 (diacerein restrictions)

Side effects

Very common: diarrhoea, soft stools, abdominal pain; dark/yellow urine (harmless).

Common: itching, rash, eczema, nausea, bloating.

Rare but serious: liver injury; severe diarrhoea causing dehydration and low potassium.

Precautions & warnings

Stop if diarrhoea occurs (do not continue with severe diarrhoea).
Liver tests if symptoms of liver problems.
Diabetes: monitor sugar (glucosamine).
Avoid laxatives during treatment.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding

Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Interactions

Laxatives, diuretics (diarrhoea, low potassium)
Antacids with aluminium/magnesium (reduce diacerein absorption — take 2 hours apart)
Warfarin (glucosamine may raise INR)
Antibiotics (may increase diarrhoea)

Overdose

Diarrhoea, dehydration. Supportive care.

Store below 30°C, dry.
